{"id":157,"date":"2011-11-20T22:00:42","date_gmt":"2011-11-21T03:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/shop\/blog\/?p=157"},"modified":"2015-08-24T10:05:56","modified_gmt":"2015-08-24T15:05:56","slug":"itw-part-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/11\/20\/itw-part-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing Ultrasound to Uganda with ITW (Part 8)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Wednesday June 1<sup>st<\/sup>:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a great start.\u00a0 Waking up and looking out the window we were treated to a view of which the night before we could only guess.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-158 size-full\" title=\"18\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"203\" \/>After the view, the first thing I noticed was that the food on this trip is not going to be the same fare that we had last year\u00a0\u00a0 Breakfast had many options and followed a more traditional western style breakfast (see the smile on Paulie\u2019s face).<\/p>\n<p>After breakfast we headed down the mountain to Bwindi Hospital to meet the staff and start our planning.\u00a0 The objective was to start the exchange of information necessary for the implementation of the ITW methodology at the \u201cnearby\u201d clinics.\u00a0 The definition of \u201cnearby\u201d is a bit of a misnomer in that some of these clinics may require two or three hours to reach by car or bota, and of course with the paucity of vehicles, many more hours on foot.\u00a0 The clinics we will be visiting refer their sickest patients to the Bwindi Hospital.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-159 size-full\" title=\"19\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"212\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-160 size-full\" title=\"20\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"172\" \/>We started off by touring the hospital and then held a staff meeting.\u00a0 Instantly, we knew this place is special.\u00a0 What they lack in material goods and state of the art equipment, they make up for in terms of tenacity, caring, and creativeness.\u00a0 The place exudes warmth.\u00a0 The hospital has implemented many plans by which they were able to reduce maternal death rates to approximately 3%.\u00a0 This fact is very encouraging as it suggests that if we can identify and get more of the expecting mothers to the hospital who really need medical care during delivery, the outcomes will be very good.\u00a0 The picture shows a brilliant maternal director, Elizabeth, holding a newborn baby.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-162 size-full\" title=\"21\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"175\" \/>As already mentioned, transport to the hospital is extremely difficult and borders on treacherous when there is significant rain which make the roads almost impassable.\u00a0 This problem represents a major problem in that transportation may not be possible when delivery is imminent.\u00a0 In anticipation of these difficulties, the hospital has created a hostel for delivering mothers, so that they can come and stay well in advance of (up to two weeks before) the actual delivery.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-163 size-full\" title=\"22\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"344\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/22.jpg 344w, https:\/\/www.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/22-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Relatives are responsible for feeding and caring for family members while the family member is at the hospital.\u00a0 The above picture shows a \u201ckitchen\u2019 where cooking takes place at BCH.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, we were thrilled with the meeting.\u00a0 I spent the rest of the day working on software while Paul did the meeting report.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday June 1st:\u00a0 What a great start.\u00a0 Waking up and looking out the window we were treated to a view of which the night before we could only guess.
