They do not grow wise. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><em>They grow careful.<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">That quotation, taken from Ernest Hemingway\u2019s <strong>A Farewell to Arms<\/strong> carries a deeper meaning for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ardms.org\/Discover-ARDMS\/careers-in-sonography\/Pages\/default.aspx\">ultrasound\/sonographic professionals<\/a> insomuch as a lack of attention to<!--more--> ergonomics early in your career can result in a later \u201cFarewell\u201d to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdms.org\/resources\/careers\/work-related-musculoskeletal-disorders\">musculoskeletal<\/a> comfort in your arms, shoulders and wrist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1645\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/posture.png\" alt=\"posture\" width=\"205\" height=\"135\" \/>25%<\/strong> of sonographers end their careers in scanning based on injuries sustained as a result of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdms.org\/resources\/careers\/work-related-musculoskeletal-disorders\/wrmsds-and-sonography\">\u201cwear and tear\u201d associated to the occupation<\/a>.\u00a0 Admittedly, your body is more resilient to misuse in your twenties and thirties.\u00a0 However, without precautions one finds this becomes less true over time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Developing good ergonomics is a practice best embraced early in one\u2019s scanning career.\u00a0 Sadly, many people \u201csee the light\u201d only after pain and discomfort arise.\u00a0 With that in mind, we outline a Top-5 list of habits to adopt in the video below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1637\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/cantilever-faliure.png\" alt=\"cantilever-faliure\" width=\"224\" height=\"171\" \/>For those of you fascinated by the underlying physical principles, the science behind this is also illustrated in studying <strong>cantilevers<\/strong>.\u00a0 Your arm, attached to the trunk of your body by the shoulder, operates as a cantilever when the arm is extended. The weight of your arm is generally around 5-6% of your total body weight on average.\u00a0 Accordingly, we are lifting at least that 7-9lbs and exerting greater forces of tension\/shear as it approaches 90% (perpendicular) to the body trunk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1642\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/shoulder-muscles.png\" alt=\"shoulder-muscles\" width=\"192\" height=\"156\" \/>Stated another way, the higher you raise your arm and the farther away you reach, the more stress and strain your shoulder endures.
