Shiller<\/a>, American economist and Nobel<\/a> Laureate<\/p>\n However, it is an uncomfortable truth that not everyone<\/a> keeps tabs on the latest innovations in their professional field.\u00a0 Some lawyers, for example, still maintain a preference for the yellow legal pad<\/a> over the iPad.\u00a0 Thankfully, more professionals within our industry are responsive to rapid advancements in technology.\u00a0 Still, you have likely been forced to navigate around co-workers and supervisors holding a \u201cthat\u2019s how we\u2019ve always done it<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u201d mentality often enough to understand that your enthusiasm for new technology and practices may not be universally embraced.<\/p>\n I make this point to highlight two inharmonious factors<\/span> influencing the growth and availability of MSK ultrasound practitioners<\/a>:<\/p>\n 1)<\/strong> Many facilities ARE<\/strong><\/span> interested in performing MSK ultrasound, but do not have sonographers<\/a> with the requisite skills.<\/p>\n 2)<\/strong> Because MSK ultrasound is a fairly new ultrasound specialty, most ultrasound training programs do not include it in their curriculum.<\/p>\n The consequence of this is that demand is growing for MSK professionals without a broad infrastructure of schools teaching it<\/span>.\u00a0 The aforementioned lack of formal training in the field of MSK compels sonographers to learn either on the job or from independent study.\u00a0 I was very fortunate to be mentored by Dr. Greg Wilde<\/a>, an MSK fellowship trained radiologist.\u00a0 Regrettably, most aspiring sonographers do not have the luxury of working side-by-side with a physician trained in MSK ultrasound.<\/p>\n When I discovered a dearth of educational material<\/a> covering MSK ultrasound in sufficient depth for a beginner to become proficient, I decided to create my own \u201cHow to<\/strong>\u201d manual for the specialty. \u00a0This resulted in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound: A Comprehensive Guide to MSK Imaging and Interventional Techniques<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n In addition to the specific extremity sections, the textbook<\/a> covers the following subject matter in depth:<\/p>\n In closing, I welcome your feedback, and hope you share my enthusiasm for adding specializations<\/a> to your resume.\u00a0 It is an investment that will return dividends.<\/p>\n Jamie Bie is also the author of newly-released Musculoskeletal Ultrasound: A Comprehensive Guide to MSK Imaging and Interventional Techniques<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to MSK Ultrasound.
