{"id":359,"date":"2012-01-30T17:26:11","date_gmt":"2012-01-30T22:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/shop\/blog\/?p=359"},"modified":"2015-08-24T10:22:08","modified_gmt":"2015-08-24T15:22:08","slug":"bringing-ultrasound-to-uganda-with-itw-part-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/index.php\/2012\/01\/30\/bringing-ultrasound-to-uganda-with-itw-part-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing Ultrasound to Uganda with ITW (Part 16)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-361 size-full\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" title=\"46\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/46.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" \/>Saturday, June 11<sup>th<\/sup>:<\/strong>\u00a0 Today I am spending the day working, while the rest of the group returns to the Nyamwegabira and Nyakatare clinics so that Kristen can meet the staff and perform an assessment from the clinical perspective.\u00a0 It is Paul\u2019s job to update Kristen on what we have learned about each of these sites.<\/p>\n<p>I must say that I am very homesick to see my wife and children.\u00a0 Whenever I am able, I grab a few moments down at the hospital (where the bandwidth is adequate) to skype.\u00a0 Being able to see my family while we talk, no matter how bad the connection, makes the time away bearable.\u00a0 A few times I have walked around the hospital carrying my laptop with skype running so that my family can see the people and surroundings.\u00a0 I know that taking care of four young children on her own is very challenging, and I am thankful I have a wife who is so selfless to allow Paul and me to do what we can here in Africa.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->A little note about the picture below. \u00a0A few days ago I talked about the mountain gorillas and the protected national forest (the impenetrable forest).\u00a0 There is another important facet to that story.\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-362 size-full\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" title=\"47\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/47.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"209\" \/>In 1992, as the Ugandan government decided to put aside the land as a preserve (World Heritage Site) for the 350 or so remaining mountain gorillas, they had to evict the indigenous people who called the forest their home.\u00a0 A few thousand Batwa Pygmies were forced to leave their hunter\/gatherer way of life in the forest, and adapt to an agrarian society in the communities of the Bwindi region.\u00a0 As I understand it, even after nearly 20 years out of the forest, many of these people long to go back to their old way of life, subsisting on what the forest provided.\u00a0 Many groups have been working to help these displaced tribes with education and skills to increase income, including Dr. Scott Kellerman who was mentioned previously. \u00a0In fact, Bwindi hospital was founded originally as an open-air clinic for the Batwa in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-363 size-full\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" title=\"48\" src=\"http:\/\/test.pegasuslectures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/48.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"295\" \/>As part of the economic program to improve the plight of the Batwa, the hotel had them come to perform their traditional dance while singing.\u00a0 Watching the Batwa perform, their joy for dancing became evident.\u00a0 It was as if someone threw a switch and these quiet people became electrified.\u00a0 Perhaps the most endearing aspect was watching the toddlers get involved, dancing and swaying to the music.\u00a0 At the conclusion, the Batwa displayed hand woven baskets for sale.\u00a0 (click to view the Batwa song and dance &#8211;
